Generation Go! Workshop at Dereham Church Junior Academy
On Friday 12th July 2024, our team visited Dereham Church Junior Academy to conduct Generation Go workshops for the Year 6 cohort. As we normally meet Year 10s at high schools in advance of work experience weeks, this was an exciting first for the project!

The idea behind conducting workshops for the Year 6s was to introduce them to independent travel and begin to build their confidence and know-how as they make the transition from primary school to high school when they may find themselves needing to catch the bus or plan journeys alone for the first time.
Prior to the sessions, we adapted our presentation and activities to ensure they were tailored for the younger audience, highlighting the importance of checking destination blinds to make sure the bus is going in the right direction, asking the driver if they are unsure, and the £2 single fare cap. We followed this with a demonstration of how to use our online timetables and journey-planning resources and consolidated this learning with an interactive journey-planning activity. Over the course of the morning, we presented to 4 classes, reaching a total of 117 pupils.

The workshops proved to be a great success and it was wonderful to meet so many children who were enthusiastic about the prospect of bus travel. The engagement with the activities was excellent and it was clear that the children readily grasped the materials and would be able to use the resources independently.
Overall, this was a brilliant opportunity to inspire and encourage the next generation of bus-users and we will be rolling the project out more widely to Year 6 pupils next academic year.
